U.S. cross-border financial flows, June · Treasury release, August 17

Foreign investors bought more than they sold, but less than last month

Net purchases of U.S. stocks and long-term bonds fell by about $55.7 billion from May.

Today's headlineJune net buying: about $207.1 billion

Does that amount mean foreign investors bought more than last month?

Subtract sales, then compare the months.

① Compare purchases after subtracting sales

May$263BJune$207B

Net purchases means purchases minus sales.

That was about $262.8 billion in May and about $207.1 billion in June.

② The monthly addition got smaller

Net purchases fell by about $55.7 billion.

Foreign investors still bought more than they sold in June.

③ The broader total rose

May total net inflow$132BJune total net inflow$134B

Net inflow means money coming in minus money going out.

Total net inflow was about $131.5 billion in May and about $133.5 billion in June.

That broader total also includes U.S. residents' foreign investments, short-term securities and banking flows.
