Revised higher, yet growth slowed

The estimate for the same quarter rose. Compared with the previous quarter, growth was slower.

Today's headlineUS second-quarter growth revised to a 2.2% annual rate

Does a higher growth estimate mean the economy sped up?

The answer depends on what you compare.

① The same quarter got a new estimate

April–June: previous estimate1.5%April–June: revised estimate2.2%

Estimated April–June growth rose from about 1.5% to 2.2%.

BEA raised its estimates of investment, consumer spending and government spending.

Both growth figures express that quarter's pace as an annual rate.

② That is a revision, not growth between announcements

Subtract about 1.5% from 2.2% to find how far the estimate was raised.

That difference comes from recalculating a period already over.

It does not measure extra growth between the announcements.

③ Growth was still slower than the previous quarter

January–March: revised annual rate2.5%April–June: revised annual rate2.2%

The updated figures show 2.5% growth in January–March and 2.2% in April–June.

The economy grew, but its growth rate slowed.

④ What does this mean for your household?

This statistical revision does not directly change your pay or household bills.

Whether you live in the US or elsewhere, national growth does not tell you what happened to your own budget.

  • Is this a comparison with the previous period?
  • Does the measure remove price changes?

⑤ Revised figures can change again

Later releases can revise these past figures again.

Next, check July–September growth alongside any revisions to earlier quarters.
